Triglav (2864 m) is the highest peak in Slovenia and a central symbol of Slovenian mountaineering. It lies in the heart of the Triglav National Park (TNP). The ascent is possible via several marked routes; the final section to the summit follows secured passages (steel cables, pegs). For most hikers, the ideal choice is a two-day climb with an overnight stay in a mountain hut.
(timings assume good fitness; in summer or larger groups, add 20–30% more time)
Starting point: Krma Valley (parking at Kovinarska hut / Planina Zg. Krma)
Elevation gain: ~1500 m
Time: 6–8 h to the hut + 1–1.5 h hut → summit; descent 5–7 h
Difficulty: easy to demanding marked trail (summit ridge secured)
Why choose: the “friendliest” and clearest classic route; excellent for a first ascent of Triglav.
Starting point: Aljažev dom in Vrata Valley
Variants:
via Prag (more common): 5.5–7.5 h to Kredarica
via Tominškova (more exposed): 6–8 h to Kredarica
Summit: +1–1.5 h
Difficulty: demanding, long secured sections
Why choose: legendary route beneath the North Face of Triglav; for more experienced hikers.
Starting point: Rudno polje
Time: 6–8 h to Planika/Kredarica + 1–1.5 h summit; descent 5–7 h
Difficulty: easy to demanding
Why choose: gradual ascent, scenic meadows and pastures, popular for 2-day climbs.
Starting point: Planina Blato above Lake Bohinj
Time: 7–9 h to the hut + 1–1.5 h summit
Difficulty: demanding due to length
Why choose: picturesque Bohinj route through alpine pastures.
Starting point: Zadnjica Valley (Trenta)
Time: 7–9 h to Planika + 1 h summit
Difficulty: demanding, some secured sections
Why choose: quieter, wilder southern route with stunning views.
Starting point: Savica waterfall / Ukanc (Bohinj)
Time: usually 2–3 days; 1st day to huts at the Seven Lakes Valley, 2nd day summit
Difficulty: demanding due to length
Why choose: excellent multi-day trek through the Valley of the Seven Lakes.
Starting point: Kot Valley (near Dovje/Mojstrana) or Krma
Time: 6–8 h to Stanič hut + 1.5–2 h summit
Difficulty: demanding, exposed and secured sections
Why choose: less crowded route, epic views of the northern walls.
Note on the summit ridge (Mali Triglav – Triglav): narrow, exposed, fully secured with cables. Helmet strongly recommended, via ferrata set useful for less experienced climbers.
